I had the pleasure of spending the day at the Gaya Island Resort, nestled within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. The friendly team went above and beyond to cater to couples seeking romance, offering heavenly massages and private dining options, including a traditional Malaysian meal prepared especially for two on the secluded beach (a 5-minute boat ride away). The spa village also offers a range of activities, from diving to yoga, cooking classes, and nature trails.Although I didn’t have the opportunity to stay overnight at the resort or sample their breakfasts, I did get to tour the villas, which left me breathless. Imagine chic, minimalist decor, massive beds, and balconies with epic ocean views – it’s truly an idyllic retreat. The lunch we enjoyed on the beach, freshly prepared in front of us, gave me a glimpse into the culinary delights that await guests at Gaya Island Resort.
Special Mention For A Few Nights: Sukau Rainforest Lodge
Our one-night stay at Sukau Rainforest Lodge was a highlight of our trip. This rustic retreat has hosted renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough multiple times, testament to its commitment to eco-friendliness. While it may not have been the most luxurious accommodation we experienced, it held a special place in my heart. The clean and charming rooms featured ceiling fans and a refreshing tropical atmosphere. Each guest is provided with a traditional Malaysian sarong, which adds a touch of local culture to dinner – a delectable Malay buffet served under the stars! For couples seeking an immersive nature experience and willing to trade modern amenities for authenticity, this lodge amidst the Kinabatangan River is a must-visit. A 1-3 night stay is recommended, unless you’re a true wildlife enthusiast or have a special affinity for Attenborough’s work.
Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort
As I stepped into Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort in Kota Kinabalu, I was enveloped by an atmosphere of elegance and warmth. The attentive staff, with their genuine smile, made me feel like royalty. My suite on the private Ocean wing, reserved for VIP guests, was a haven of luxury. The expansive balcony, almost as large as the room itself, boasted a hot tub, perfect for unwinding under the stars.The resort’s thoughtful touches didn’t stop there. Fresh and dried fruit were always within reach, and the room scent menu allowed me to personalize my space with aromatic oils. Upon returning to my room, I was greeted by the intoxicating fragrance of exotic frangipani, a treat that never grew old.Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort offers a trifecta of indulgence: three kilometres of private beach, multiple pools, and an array of watersports. Daily activities and a nature reserve, where orangutans roam free, added to the sense of adventure. What more could one ask for?As I relaxed in my suite, I felt truly pampered. The resort’s warm hospitality extended from the moment guests arrive, announced by the gentle strike of a gong and the soft melodies of Malaysian musicians dressed in traditional attire. A refreshing welcome drink awaited me, setting the tone for a leisurely getaway.Culinary delights were aplenty, with multiple restaurants to choose from. Makan Street, inspired by traditional Malaysian food stalls, was my personal favourite.
