How did you first garner the attention of Hollywood stars?
As a child growing up in Brooklyn, I never imagined that my passion for vintage jewelry would take me on a journey from the streets of New York to the glamour of Hollywood. My fascination with antique jewels began as I scoured flea markets and accumulated a collection of unique pieces. This curiosity ultimately led me to Paris, where I discovered even more magnificent treasures.
Is there a different process when you’re creating an engagement ring that you know will be seen by millions?
As a designer, I pour my heart and soul into every engagement ring I create, regardless of whether it’s destined for a grand proposal or an intimate moment between two loved ones. The desire to craft uniquely beautiful pieces drives me, which is why I’m thrilled to be teaming up with Kay Jewelers to share my designs with a wider audience. When it comes to selecting the perfect engagement ring, everyone shares the same goal: to find something breathtakingly stunning that also holds deep meaning and significance.
Tell me about the designs behind a few of your favorite celebrity engagement rings?
A closer look at the stunning engagement rings of Nicole Richie and Emily Blunt reveals two unique masterpieces that perfectly reflect their individual styles. The vintage charm of Emily Blunt’s Edwardian-inspired ring is a romantic nod to the early 20th century, featuring a 3-carat diamond set in platinum – a flawless fit for the lovely actress. Meanwhile, Nicole Richie was an integral part of her design process, resulting in a breathtaking 4-carat round diamond ring that exudes her signature elegance and poise.
Who has been your favourite star to wear your pieces?
As a designer, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most captivating and talented women in the world. In the past year alone, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with incredible individuals like Cate Blanchett, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez – whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with for years. More recently, I’ve also had the chance to work with up-and-coming artists like Lorde, who brings her own unique energy to every project she’s involved in. What I love most about my experiences is that each star is looking for something distinct that reflects their personal style, making every collaboration a chance to create something truly special. For me, working with these talented women is always rewarding and never fails to leave me feeling inspired.
What are the biggest ring trends for 2016?
The allure of halo settings and unconventional cuts like emerald, oval, and pear has captivated brides-to-be. These statement pieces are ideal for the confident woman seeking to make a lasting impression with her engagement ring. Meanwhile, rose gold and mixed metal combinations have gained popularity, offering a unique way to add a touch of fashion flair and set one’s ring apart. As a jeweler dedicated to blending modern trends with timeless designs, I find myself constantly navigating the intersection of classic elegance and contemporary style – a challenge that ultimately fuels my creative process.

The trend for unique gemstone cuts continues to gain momentum, with one particular style garnering significant attention: the cushion cut. This distinctive design boasts a rectangular or square shape with rounded corners, effectively showcasing the beauty of the setting. The cushion cut’s popularity can be attributed in part to its appeal among celebrities, with high-profile individuals such as Rachel Zoe, Jessica Simpson, Mark Wahlberg, and Rhea Durham all requesting this style in recent times.
What do you use as inspiration for your new designs?
While scouring through my treasured collection of vintage jewels, I find myself drawn to their distinct allure. It’s not just the captivating aesthetic or the exceptional workmanship that sets them apart – it’s the extraordinary blend of era-specific charm and timeless elegance that makes these pieces truly irresistible. The intricate details, the refined craftsmanship, and the undeniable character they exude all combine to make vintage jewels a treasure trove of inspiration.

Do you find more brides are coming in to find their ring, or do grooms still want to surprise them with a proposal?
Shopping for a loved one can be a thrilling experience, especially when shared with the person it’s meant for. I’ve noticed many couples enjoying this bonding moment together, and I couldn’t agree more – it’s fantastic! Not only does it provide insight into their partner’s preferences, but also allows them to revel in the excitement of the hunt, making it a truly memorable occasion.
What’s your favourite piece you’ve ever designed?
As I reflect on my most cherished projects, one piece that stands out in my mind is a stunning 10-carat pink cushion cut diamond. The opportunity to work on it for three months allowed me to pour my heart and soul into crafting a true masterpiece. One aspect of this project that fills me with immense pride is the ability to combine my unique aesthetic sensibilities with the glamour of Hollywood, making them accessible to women around the world. This vision was realized through the launch of my Neil Lane Bridal and Neil Lane Designs collections, which marked a significant milestone in my career.
