Our Proposal Story
We first crossed paths in college, brought together by mutual friends. Six years of dating followed before Cale popped the question as Christmas approached in 2014; I had given up hope of an engagement by 2015 – little did I know that a ring had been patiently waiting in Cale’s apartment since October. Our winter getaway with Cale’s cousins turned out to be the perfect setup for his surprise proposal.
We rented a cozy cabin in northern Michigan and spent Friday night there, unaware of what was to come. The next morning, we mapped out our hikes and planned our day, oblivious to Jon’s whispered hints to Kate that something special was about to happen as we set out on our adventure. Each stop seemed like just another picturesque spot, but Jon and Kate were secretly sizing up the perfect proposal location; I was too busy taking in the scenery to suspect anything.
Our final destination was the charming fishing town of Leland, Michigan. The four of us strolled out onto the piers, surrounded by the serene beauty of Lake Michigan and snow-covered landscapes. Jon and Kate wandered off, leaving me to follow; that’s when Cale grabbed my hand and said, ‘Wait, take my picture.’ I laughed, thinking it was just his usual playful joke, but he gave me a hug and whispered, ‘I love you.
‘When I turned back for a moment to snap a photo of the lake, he wasn’t where I expected him to be. He was down on one knee, and my world froze. The proposal finally sank in, and I touched the box to confirm it was real; I laughed because Cale always makes me laugh, then realized I needed to respond. With a heart full of joy, I said yes.
The Photography
Having had the pleasure of attending high school with Evan, I’ve had the opportunity to develop a strong foundation of trust in his abilities as a photographer. My personal experience has only been reinforced by my growing admiration for Emily’s captivating sense of style. As someone who’s had the privilege of witnessing Evan’s artistic growth over the years, I was always confident that he would be the ideal choice to capture the essence of my special day – when it came time to plan my wedding.
His unerring ability to distill the raw emotion and intricate details from any scene has consistently impressed me, making him the perfect candidate to bring my vision to life. What’s more, I believe that a collaboration between Evan and Emily would result in a visually stunning and harmonious blend of masculine and feminine perspectives – a synergy that would undoubtedly add depth and nuance to the photographs.
The Venue
As a self-proclaimed city girl, I thrive in urban environments where the energy is palpable and the atmosphere is always on the move. When selecting a venue for my event, I deliberately chose one that captured the essence of downtown living without being too over-the-top or pretentious. While I do appreciate a touch of elegance, I knew it was essential to resist the allure of an opulent black-tie affair, as I had already decided that the tone should reflect our everyday lives.
By doing so, we could create an atmosphere that felt authentic and relatable.
Advice for Other Couples
To truly make your wedding planning a success, it’s essential to define who you are as a couple and what matters most to you. This self-awareness will help you create an event that reflects your unique style and priorities, rather than simply replicating someone else’s vision. With billions of stunning weddings out there, it’s crucial to focus on crafting yours, rather than trying to recreate another’s.
By understanding your personal aesthetic and what drives you, you’ll be better equipped to balance your budget and make decisions that align with your values. For me, the visual elements were paramount – I wanted every detail, from the invitations to the music, food, and thank-you cards, to harmonize and tell our story. By prioritizing this cohesive look, I was able to allocate my resources effectively and create a wedding that truly felt like us.

The Honeymoon
In the eyes of my mother, research suggests that couples require a honeymoon getaway after exchanging vows as fate would have it, my partner and I planned a weekend escape to Northern Michigan following our special day. The allure of Midwest fall was too great for me to resist, as I’m captivated by the season’s rustic charm additionally, having my biological father from El Salvador and siblings from Scotland in the area, we wanted to spend quality time together.
We’ve since scheduled our honeymoon for February in Guatemala, allowing us to escape the harsh Midwest winter weather. The experience has been nothing short of delightful; I must admit that I’m particularly fond of foliage-themed decor, making this styling a perfect fit for my aesthetic sensibilities. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Evan and Emily of Perregeaux, as well as newlyweds Cale & Cordelia for sharing their joyous wedding celebration with us.
May their love continue to flourish, and may readers be inspired by the beauty of real weddings.
