The Inspiration
As I began planning my dream wedding, I was struck by the overwhelming abundance of neutral color schemes on Pinterest and similar platforms. The ubiquitous presence of blush tones and grey hues seemed to suffocate any sense of vibrancy or uniqueness. In stark contrast, Kauai, affectionately known as the Garden Island, is a place where life bursts forth in every corner, begging to be celebrated with an explosion of color and aloha spirit.
Despite my best efforts, I found it challenging to source inspiration that accurately captured this essence. Perhaps, dear readers, we can share our journey and find solace in knowing we’re not alone in craving a wedding that exudes the warmth and joy that comes from embracing the beauty of color.
The Ceremony
We exchanged vows beneath a vibrant bougainvillea arbor, surrounded by the gentle wisdom of one of Kauai’s local elders. The ceremony unfolded with traditional Hawaiian flair, featuring a poignant sea salt ritual and haunting chanting. As we prepared to say ‘I do,’ our Facebook feeds were filled with ominous images of El Niño-driven hurricanes threatening the island. Yet, on our special day, the heavens cooperated, blessing us with a gentle rain that only added to Kauai’s natural beauty.
Even more miraculously, the skies cleared just as my closest friends cinched up my dress – the perfect serendipity for Tom and me to seal our love amidst the misty veil of dozens of breathtaking waterfalls.
The Venue
For our event, selecting a venue was an effortless decision. The historic mission house, situated at the boundary of a lush taro patch, held a special significance for us. Its proximity to my childhood elementary school and stunning views of the three majestic mountains of Hanalei only added to its appeal.
