We recently shared an exciting post about the most epic and thrilling trips on the planet, covering once-in-a-lifetime journeys to destinations that have been on your bucket list since childhood. These vacations are perfect for special occasions like honeymoons or anniversaries. However, we couldn’t fit all our suggestions into a single post, so today we’re excited to share Part Two of our ultimate travel guide.
We’ve had a hard time narrowing down the options, and it’s possible that a Part Three is on the horizon. While some couples may prefer a relaxing beach getaway or city break after their wedding, others will crave adventure and excitement to kick off their marriage, and why not? Adventure comes in many forms, from luxury yacht charters in the Ionian Sea to train journeys through Kenya, camping expeditions at the South Pole, or road trips along California’s scenic highways.
We believe we’ve got something for everyone on our list, so without further ado, here’s Part Two of our honeymoon bucket list – featuring even more incredible experiences and destinations to inspire your own dream vacation.
The Greek Islands
The allure of the Greek Islands has always been undeniable, but they never seemed like a must-visit destination for me. That was until my friend returned from their summer getaway, sharing their entire experience through Instagram Stories and sparking an insatiable desire to explore the region’s picturesque ports and secluded coves.
The idea of chartering a boat, drifting lazily from one stunning location to the next, with the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean and Ionian Seas as our backdrop, is now firmly etched in my mind. I can almost smell the tangy aroma of fresh tzatziki wafting through the air, accompanied by the sweet sounds of laughter and Greek wine flowing like a fountain.
It’s hard not to imagine this idyllic scenario as the perfect setting for a romantic honeymoon, with iconic destinations like Santorini, Mykonos, and Rhodes serving as just a few highlights from the region’s rich tapestry. And yet, it’s equally alluring to venture off the beaten path and discover some of the lesser-known islands that have their own unique charm, making this Greek odyssey an experience that will leave you enchanted and yearning for more.
India
India is a land of contrasts, where the romance of a city like Udaipur can be juxtaposed with the grandeur of the Taj Mahal or the spirituality of the Ganges. The cultural richness and diversity of cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Varanasi, and Delhi are equally fascinating, while the serene beaches of Goa provide a tranquil retreat.
Meanwhile, the wildlife reserves of Kashmir and Kerala offer a glimpse into the country’s natural beauty, and then there’s the people – warm, welcoming, and full of life. The food is a symphony of spices and flavors that will tantalize your taste buds. Whether you travel by train, plane, motorbike, boat, or rickshaw, India is an adventure waiting to unfold, designed to captivate every one of your senses.
Antarctica
For many couples, a trip to Antarctica is the ultimate honeymoon goal; however, it comes with a hefty price tag that can rival the cost of their wedding. A journey to this untouched and breathtakingly beautiful destination typically takes the form of a cruise departing from Chile or Argentina, although there are also options available from Australia and New Zealand.
For the more adventurous (and affluent) travelers, inland camps provide an immersive experience, while flights to the South Pole offer a unique opportunity to walk around the world in mere minutes. Imagine kayaking through crystal-clear waters, capturing adorable penguin colonies on camera, and marveling at the planet’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. A honeymoon in Antarctica is undoubtedly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that will leave an indelible mark on any traveler.
Cairo to Capetown
Africa, a vast and diverse continent, offers an array of journeys and standalone destinations that can challenge even the most seasoned traveler. One trip could potentially tick off many must-see attractions on your bucket list; for instance, embark on a journey from Egypt in North Africa, where you’ll experience Middle Eastern influences, visit the Pyramids, and enjoy a serene Nile cruise.
From there, head south for an adventure of a lifetime, taking in the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultures of countries like Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa. Imagine yourself trekking through the majestic mountains of Tanzania or watching giraffes roam freely in Zimbabwe’s national parks; you could opt for a 14-day luxury rail tour, an 80-day motorbike ride, or even try your hand at dune surfing in Namibia or rafting in Zambia.
With its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and warm hospitality, Africa is a continent that offers endless possibilities for adventure seekers; by planning ahead and committing the time, you’ll find that exploring this incredible region is more accessible than you might think.
Queensland
The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system, is an absolute must-mention when it comes to discussing bucket list destinations. Stretching 2000km off Australia’s east coast, this incredible natural wonder boasts a rich underwater ecosystem that will leave you in awe. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, The Great Barrier Reef has something for everyone.
Take a leisraney swim, snorkel among the coral formations, dive to discover the reef’s hidden treasures, or even take a seaplane tour to get a bird’s eye view of this natural wonder. Base yourself in the Whitsundays for an unforgettable experience of pristine white sand and crystal-clear waters. Daintree Rainforest and Surfer’s Paradise offer a welcome respite from ocean exploration, providing a chance to explore the region’s diverse landscapes.
However, it’s essential to be mindful of your impact on this fragile ecosystem. With 15 million tourists visiting annually, it’s crucial to take responsible measures to protect the reef. Avoid damaging or removing coral, refrain from littering and wear clothing that covers your skin as much as possible to prevent pollution. By taking these simple steps, you can ensure a positive and sustainable experience for yourself and future visitors.
Temples of Angkor
As a former resident of Siem Reap, this sprawling complex of temples holds a deep affection for me. However, its reputation is well-deserved, making it an unforgettable destination for any traveler, including newlyweds embarking on their dream honeymoon. Originally built as a Hindu sanctuary, the site underwent significant transformations over time to become a Buddhist place of worship.
This incredible city of temples can be explored at leisure from dawn till dusk, whether by tuk-tuk or bicycle, or viewed from above via helicopter and hot air balloon. Just outside the tourist town of Siem Reap, with its impressive hotels and delectable restaurants, Angkor Wat stands as a testament to the region’s rich history. Yet, there are numerous other awe-inspiring sites to discover throughout Cambodia.
While joining the throngs at sunrise for a glimpse of this iconic temple is still an experience worth having, I recommend returning in the evening to witness the real magic unfold with a street vendor by your side as dusk settles over the city.
Visit Ta Prohm early in the day to capture its mystical atmosphere sans tourists, venture to Phnom Kulen for a unique mountain experience, and explore the floating villages on Tonle Sap to gain insight into daily life amidst both rainy season and dry conditions. Above all, Cambodia’s inhabitants are renowned for their unwavering hospitality, so be sure to spend ample time honing your Khmer skills and engaging with locals in warm conversation.
New Zealand South Island
In New Zealand’s South Island, reality seems to blur with fantasy. This enchanting region has been the inspiration for Middle Earth, Narnia, King Kong’s Skull Island, and other fictional realms. Its remoteness only adds to its allure, making it an ideal destination for a honeymoon that promises to truly transport you to another world. A haven for outdoor enthusiasts, the South Island boasts vast forests, majestic glaciers, crystal-clear fjords, stunning beaches, and incredible wildlife.
Here, couples can indulge in thrilling adventures amidst breathtaking wilderness landscapes.
Pacific Coast Highway
This trip has been etched in my memory as one of the most unforgettable experiences nine years ago. The journey from Los Angeles to San Francisco takes you through a diverse array of attractions, including the laid-back luxury of Santa Barbara, the charming Dutch-inspired Solvang, the picturesque Carmel, and the awe-inspiring Big Sur coastline.
But that’s not all – this route also offers hot springs for relaxation, big waves for adrenaline junkies, local wines to sip on, and delectable seafood chowder to savor. What makes this trip particularly appealing is its accessibility and flexibility, allowing couples to take their honeymoon at their own pace and budget.
Japan
Japan is an enigmatic country that has captured the hearts of many travelers. With its rich cultural heritage and unique customs, it’s no surprise that it’s often at the top of many people’s bucket lists. Despite being influenced by globalization, Japan retains a distinct charm that sets it apart from other countries. It’s a place where ancient traditions coexist with modern innovations, making it a fascinating destination for anyone looking to broaden their horizons.
The country boasts breathtaking natural beauty, from the serene landscapes of Kyoto to the vibrant streets of Tokyo, and what better way to experience all this than on a romantic honeymoon getaway? Japan offers a one-of-a-kind setting that’s sure to make any couple feel like they’re in a real-life fairy tale.
